Alpha Establishes Scholarship at Marshall Medical School

(Associated Press, April 7) – Alpha Natural Resources has established a scholarship at Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine.

The company operates more than 60 active mines and 22 coal preparation plants, including the Belle Ayr and Eagle Butte mines in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin.

Marshall announced Monday that the scholarship will be available to first-year medical students.

The university says Alpha transferred to the scholarship the remaining funds from a loan program initiated by Alpha predecessor, Massey Energy, that encouraged Marshall medical students to practice rural medicine after they complete their residencies.

The first preference will be given to a son or daughter of an Alpha employee, while the second preference will apply to a student from a county where the company has an operation.

The award is renewable for three additional years based on academic progress.
