Wyoming Reclamation Award Goes to Cloud Peak

(Associated Press, June 22) – Cloud Peak Energy says its Cordero Rojo coal mine will receive a state reclamation award in recognition of its work redirecting the Belle Fourche River.

Cloud Peak announced in a press release that the mine will be honored Friday with the state of Wyoming Reclamation Award from the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality.

Cloud Peak spokesman Rick Curtsinger says the water was first diverted in 1996 to ensure quality and availability for downstream users and was diverted back to a reconstructed section at the end of 2011.

The release says workers had to stabilize the stream channel to prevent erosion by using a grass cover. They also reintroduced aquatic life.
